There are many covenants in the Bible. A covenant is a "contract". We are going to discuss only general contracts with Yahweh. The covenants with Yahweh degrade with each new covenant until finally the better covenant is restored and confirmed.

First, was Yahweh's promise (covenant) to Adam and Eve, although stated to that serpent, the devil:

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15

This was a promise of victory through the seed of the woman.

The next covenant was Yahweh's promise to Noah:

And Elohim said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. Genesis 9:12-15

The token of this covenant was the rainbow.

Yahweh made two covenants with Abram. The first was the better and we'll call it the Abramic covenant. This covenant occurred after his blessing from the priest-king, Melchisedek. It was a spiritual covenant based on Abram's faith and had no obligations on the part of Abram. Likewise, it had no token. Tokens are physical, but this was a spiritual covenant.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in יהוה [Yahweh, our god]; and he counted it to him for righteousness. In the same day the יהוה [Yahweh] made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Genesis 15:5-6,18

Unfortunately, Abram lost faith. He and Sarai thought Yahweh needed a little help, so Sarai gave Abram her servant Hagar, to wed. Ishmael was born of this union, but he wasn't the heir of the better covenant.

Yahweh made a second covenant with Abram, inferior to the first. It was at the time of this covenant that Yahweh renamed Abram to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah. This lesser covenant was physical instead of spiritual and required Abraham to obey and be circumcised, along with his offspring.

This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. Genesis 17:10,11

Circumcision was the token of this lesser covenant.

This Abrahamic covenant was renewed with Jacob and Isaac.

Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26:42

This same covenant was confirmed with Moses:

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: Exodus 19:5

However, a few more tokens were introduced. Aaron's rod, that budded (Numbers 17:10) and the tables of the covenant (Deuteronomy 9:9) were kept in the ark of the covenant. Circumcision was not removed, the others were added. Obedience was still required (Deuteronomy 4:13) and keeping the Sabbath Holy was a sign of obedience to the covenant (Exodus 31:16).

The Abrahamic covenant is not the better covenant. The prophets foretell that a better covenant will be made.

Behold, the days come, saith יהוה [Yahweh], that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith יהוה [Yahweh]: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith יהוה [Yahweh], I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:31-33

And he [Messiah] shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:27

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Master, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith יהוה [Yahweh] of hosts. Malachi 3:1

This concludes the Law and the prophets' (Old Testament's) treatment of Yahweh's general covenants (other covenants were made with David and his family).

Jews claim that is the end of Yahweh's covenants and they still wait for fulfillment. Christians, however, believe that Yahushua (Jesus), the seed of the woman, fulfilled the prophecy of Messiah and confirmed the better covenant.

If the Jews are right, the prophecies have either been wrong or still future. If still future, there have been many years that Yahweh has been absent or silent (1 Kings 18:27). If Christians are right, Yahweh's plan has continued to unfold, He has not been silent, and He has continued to lead.

If the Jews are right, where are their tokens (proof) of covenant? They have lost Aaron's rod that budded, the tables of the covenant, the ark of the covenant, the Sabbath (see here), the temple, the holy fire, their priesthood and their sacrificial system. All they have left is circumcision. On the other hand, if that covenant has been replaced by a better covenant, without tokens, these loses are immaterial, but they must accept and believe in the Messiah for confirmation. Paul testifies that Yahushua (Jesus), was the Messiah, who confirmed (mediated) the better covenant.

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. Hebrews 8:6

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith יהוה [Yahweh], I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; Hebrews 10:14-16

This is a direct fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:31-33 and is available now to all who believe, but later to unbelievers (see Harvests Of Redemption)
