Yahweh would like to speak directly with His created beings. He spoke directly with Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abram and Moses when covenanting with them. He wanted to speak directly with His children after leaving Egypt, but they were too afraid.

And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not Elohim speak with us, lest we die. Exodus 20:19

Because of this fear, Yahweh agreed to speak only through messengers, His prophets. Even then, it would be His preference if ALL were prophets so He could still speak directly.

And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would Elohim that all יהוה's [Yahweh's] people were prophets, and that יהוה [Yahweh, our god] would put his spirit upon them! Numbers 11:29

and he said, “Please hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak to him in a dream. Numbers 12:6

Yahweh was faithful to keep raising up prophets to speak for Him. He raised up Samuel, Ezra, Nehemiah, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and Zechariah, as well as other minor prophets.

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. Deuteronomy 18:18-19

Look! I am going to send to you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of Yahweh! Malachi 4:5

These prophets were either followed by Yahushua (Jesus), the seed of woman given as Messiah and prophet, or Yahweh went silent. For those who disbelieve in Yahushua, the Messiah, one has to ask "Where is your prophet after Malachi was written?" "Has your Yahweh been silent ever since?" (1 Kings 18:27)

According to the testimony of those who were there at the time,

Elohim, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Hebrews 1:1-2

For he received from יהוה [Yahweh] the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Peter 1:17-19
