The feet and toes of the metal image are part iron and part clay, that cannot unite (cleave) together.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. Daniel 2:43
Most Bible commentators interpret this to mean that the nations (kings of the world) will not unite (cleave). This completely misses the point that the clay is God's people, NOT kingdoms. The people of Yahweh will separate from the iron kingdom and never cleave to it again.
This implies that the people of the living God have never previously or yet separated from Satan's kingdoms on Earth. There was no clay in the gold or silver or brass or iron legs. BUT they will eventually separate and refuse to cleave (unite). Because His people still have not separated from Satan's kingdom, the period of the ten toes of iron and clay is still future.
Iron and clay cannot mingle, but Yahweh's people try to mingle with Babylon and Rome.
How do we know the clay hasn't yet separated from the iron? Because there is no evidence of any people who have become aware of the nature of government (kingdom) and separated themselves from it.
As long as God's people love and worship and trust government (respect it, have faith in it, trust it for their protection and security, desire to be its citizens and vote in its elections) they are absorbed by the iron.
Not until Yahweh's people hate Satan's kingdom with all its worldly kings (governments) will they separate and not cleave to it.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve Elohim and mammon. Matthew 6:24
... Babylon the great is fallen, ... Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Revelation 18:1-4
