This study is still in progress. It is my intention to complete the feasts as the feast year unfolds, each in its season.

Spiritual Meaning

The second day of the week of unleavened bread (a seven day feast) is set aside for a special feast - The feast of firstfruits. You may recall that Passover is related to the barley harvest. This day is the first workday after Passover and time to start the barley harvest. The first barley harvested (firstfruits) is to be waved before the Yahweh as an offering. It represents Yahushua who was the first of the first fruits (barley firstfruits) to be harvested (resurrected and glorified). This is the day that he rose from the grave. Yahushua was murdered on Passover, like the passover lamb, rested in the grave on the first day of unleavened bread (always a weekly Sabbath) and rose on the day of firstfruits, the first workday of the week.

The feast of firstfruits was celebrated for centuries in anticipation of Yahusua's resurrection. Now we celebrate it as a memorial (in remembrance) of His resurrection. But we also celebrate it in anticipation of the final Barley Harvest when the elect are taken to Heaven, at the second coming of our King in the clouds.

1 Corinthians 15:20-23
But now is the Messiah risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in the Messiah shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Yahushua the firstfruits; afterward they that are Yahushua's at his coming.

The temporal purpose of Firstfruits is to demonstrate to man that Yahweh is owner of all our wealth. He gives us the ability to attain success by returning to Yahweh the “first” of our produce. We are acknowledging the source. Yahweh declared that the firstfruits on the land was His, including the firstborn of livestock. Even the Donkey was required to be redeemed. (Ex. 22:29, 23:19, 34:26, Dt. 18:4, 26:2)

Observance

Modern observance may be a little difficult. Most of us are nowhere near a harvesting barley crop and we certainly don't own one. Each must decide how to apply the spiritual analogies and lessons to our lives.

But, as with all the feasts, enjoy the company of family and friends and hold a celebration!
