Calendars In History


This study of calendars will start with the newest (which is also the one we know intimately) and work back. As we go back in time we will get closer to God's true, original calendar. The one He gave when He created the Earth.

Gregorian Calendar

The calendar in current usage was ordered by Pope Gregory XIII, and was implemented by Rome on Thursday, Oct. 4, 1582

For this reason it is called the "Gregorian Calendar"

Over time, it has been adopted by most of the modern world, but it didn't happen immediately.

Adoption took from 1582-1949

The Gregorian calendar is ENTIRELY fictional and arbitrary. Neither the number of days in a month nor when a month starts nor when a week starts have any basis in any observable phenomenon.

The year is the ONLY cycle having any relationship to one of God's timepieces, the sun, but its start is still arbitrary.

The current day cannot be determined by looking at the skies, but can only be calculated by counting previous days/weeks/months/years.

Basis - The Gregorian Calendar is solar based. The moon plays no part. This is an immediate warning that it is counterfeit.

This calendar was designed long after Christ's death, so He never could have used / observed it.

Israel has NOT (to this day) adopted this (or any other Roman) calendar for religious days, even though they have accepted the perpetually repeating week.

You know these names are NOT Biblical, so don't try to convince me to worship on any day of the pagan god saturn or the sun god.

Julian Calendar

The "Julian Calendar" was named after the Roman emperor, Julius Caesar who, advised by the astronomer Sosigenes, ordered a sweeping reform. 46 B.C. was made 445 days long by imperial decree, bringing the calendar back in step with the seasons.

It eliminated all reference to the moon and first introduced the concept of a perpetually repeating weekly cycle. (see Perpetual Weekly Cycles for further study).

Basis - Solar based - no help from the moon

Adoption - 46 B.C. - 1840 A.D.

The Julian calendar was primarily adopted when / as the peoples were either converted to Catholicism or conquered.

Therefore, it was adopted fairly early in Catholic Europe, and finally in 1840 A.D. by Turkey.

In A.D. 4 the Julian Calendar finally stabilized.

There is NO way that the Jewish nation at the time of Christ would have / did accept or adopt this calendar. To this day, they have NOT adopted any Roman calendar, but have their own calendar.

Even though this calendar (slightly) pre-existed Christ's birth, it was NEVER used by the Israelites.

The date of Passover can NOT be calculated on any Roman calendar.

Ancient Roman Calendar

At the time of their early kings, Roman months were of a length identical to the lunar cycle. Each month was divided into sections that ended on the day of one of the first three phases of the moon: new, first quarter or full. All days were referred to in terms of one of these three moon phase names, Kalends, Nones or Ides.

Their weekly cycle was nine days, three periods (weeks) of nine days each.

A priest observed the sky and announced a new moon cycle to the king. For centuries afterward, Romans referred to the first day of each new month as Kalends (from their word calare, which means "to proclaim”).

The word calendar derived from this custom.

The Romans borrowed parts of their earliest known calendar from the Greeks. The calendar consisted of 10 months in a year of 304 days. The Romans seem to have ignored the remaining 61 days, which fell in the middle of winter. The 10 months were named Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. The last six names were taken from the words for five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. Romulus, the legendary first ruler of Rome, is supposed to have introduced this calendar in the 700s B.C.E. see here

Basis - Lunar based - no sun

Adoption - in the 700s B.C.E.

Israel never adopted this (or any other Roman) calendar, but it had one similarity with the Israeli calendar. That was the start of the month with the new moon phase. Otherwise, the number of days per week, the number of months per year, the start and end of the year, the lack of "ruling" by the sun, all differed.

Modern Jewish Calendar

The history of the Jewish calendar may be divided into three periods—the Biblical, the Talmudic, and the post-Talmudic. The first rested purely on the observation of the sun and the moon, the second on observation and reckoning, the third entirely on reckoning.

The current definition of the Jewish calendar is generally said to have been set down by the Sanhedrin president Hillel II in approximately C.E.(A.D.) 359.

This DEFINITELY was NOT the calendar that Christ used. (being defined over 300 years after His death). For this reason, we will spend almost no time studying it. This Jewish calendar is immaterial to this study.

It is used for religious purposes by Jews everywhere and is the official calendar of Israel, but has no relationship to the calendar given by God.

Basis - Luni-solar

Modern Jews changed from the 7th day worship to Saturday worship for expedience sake and commerce.

This happened slowly (at first) after the destruction of their temple and their slaughter and dispersion.

The ultimate power of the Jewish leaders was the authority to determine on which day Sabbath would fall each month. This power was exercised by determining when the new moon day should be celebrated. (would there be one or two new moon days?).

The Jewish leaders required two witnesses claiming to have sighted the new moon "sliver" to come before them, and be questioned. The leaders had sufficient knowledge to determine if the witnesses were true or false. They knew what the sliver should look like, and if the witness claimed otherwise, they were a false witness.

After the destruction of Jerusalem, the leaders no longer had the systems in place to question witnesses and decide the start of the month. It became more expedient to just follow a calendrical day. They picked Saturday as most closely approximating the 7th day.

But Saturday is NOT the 7th day.

Adoption - 359 A.D.

So, if this calendar was adopted by the Jewish nation in 359 AD, what were they using at the time of Christ? Read on....

Early Hebrew Calendars

This is the calendar we will carefully study because it was in existence at the time of Christ. However, it was likely that Christ used instead, the previous Jewish calendar. The one in use prior to the Babylonian captivity because it was most like the one given Moses directly by God.

The good thing is, there are more similarities than differences.

Basis - Luni-solar

The day and year were solar based and the months and weeks were lunar based. This kept the months and years synchronized. Strictly lunar calendars (like the Islamic calendar) drift over time. This means one can't count on any one month to always be in the same season. For example the first month might be in spring one year. Then it will drift a few days until eventually the first month occurs in summer, then fall, then winter and eventually in spring again.

The Jewish calendar, even in its corrupted forms, can not do this because the new year is tied to either agricultural seasons, which are tied to the seasons as dictated by the sun or actual cycles of the sun.

The months and weekly cycle, in both this calendar and the pre-captivity calendar were dictated by the moon.

Therefore, it is a luni-solar calendar.

The sun dictates the days and years, the moon dictates the weeks and months.

Days, Weeks, Months, Years

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. Genesis 1:14,15

Days

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:16-18

We readily understand the meaning of day and night and how to recognize each. Days correspond to our current calendar and our understanding. There's no controversy here.

To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalms 136:7-9

Weeks

God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh day.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. Gen.2.2

This was His institution of the weekly cycle and corresponds with His commandment that we are to labor six days and rest the seventh day

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11

So far, there is little room for confusion or discrepancy.

Months

Now things start getting confused.

The confusion is largely the making of Rome and our current calendar and our lack of understanding God's ways.

The months on our Roman calendars are completely arbitrary and fictional. They are NOT based on the Biblical instruction.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

The word "season" as used here is translated from the Hebrew (Strongs 4150) mow`ed mo-ade'. Gen.1.14

This is the same word used elsewhere to denote "sign" "assembly" "feast" or "festival"

In some way, the sun, moon and stars rule (control) God's assemblies and festivals (mow`ed)

It's easy to understand how they can control the days (and by extension the weeks, being seven days). But how do they control the months?

I can say unequivocally, they do NOT control the months on a Roman calendar. The Roman calendar (and by extension the Roman pope) control those months.

Sign or Season

Biblical MonthThe word "month" in the Hebrew is the same as the word for "new moon".

There are twelve new moons in the Hebrew calendar. This is the same as saying that there are twelve months in the year. (once in a while a thirteenth month is needed to synchronize the year. We'll discuss this more fully later)

This is the fact that gives us the key that the moon also rules the months. We also find this in the basis of the Hebrew calendar, being "luni-solar" (moon-sun).

A new moon is also a new month. They are synonymous.

We can confirm this through the study of ancient luni-solar calendars. Every month started with a new moon, and no month started without a new moon.

This can also be confirmed in the heavens. A sliver of a moon is a new moon - the start of a month - the 1st day of the month. A full moon is the 15th day of the month. A half moon is either the 8th or 22nd day of the month, depending on if it follows a new moon or a full moon and which side is lighted. A dark moon is the 29th day of the month. Each of these distinct moon phases is a Sabbath or a new moon day.

Do you want to know if it's a Sabbath day? Look for God's sign in the heavens. This sign will tell you. The Roman church will not.

The words "months" and "moons" are used over 300 times in the Bible. Many of the usages were by God Himself. There is no question that months were known and understood. There is not one Biblical controversy over the meaning of "month". All these were before the creation of any Roman calendar. And all were accepted as common knowledge.

This is so simple that it doesn't require naval observatories or mathematicians or astrologers or historians tracking and recording the days. It doesn't require the command of popes. It only requires a glance heavenward.

Moon

Biblical Year

This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Exo.12.2

This command was given to Moses two weeks before the start of the Exodus.

On the night of the 14th day of that first month of the year, Passover was celebrated and the following day, the children of Israel left Egypt.

This 1st month of the year was called Abib.

And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. This day came ye out in the month Abib. Exodus 13:3,4

And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians. Num.33.3

The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt. Exo.34.18

So Abib was the first month of each year

The word "year" is used 756 times in the Bible, starting with Genesis 1.

There is no record of any controversy or doubt about the meaning of a year.

It is our duty to observe the month of Abib as the new year, every year as well as its Passover.

Do you observe new years day on January 1st every year or on the 1st day of Abib? The day you observe is indicative of who you obey and who you choose as your God.

Do you observe Christmas? or Passover?

Pagan holidays or God's Holy Days?

Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. Deut.16.1

We will discuss the Holy Days more fully later because they are intimately related to God's Sabbaths and His commands.

How did the year synchronize?

Difference with Pre-Captivity CalendarThe primary difference between this calendar and the calendar as given to Moses was the adoption of Babylonian names for the months.

Several of the Babylonian named months do occur by reference in the Bible, but originated from Babylon, not God.

Most of the names are innocent, but at least one is a pagan god (Tamuz) and none were given by God.

Many of the Biblical months were numbered, not named.

The Jews slowly changed the start of the year from God's start until their new year was very different than the one God gave them, but this did NOT effect the weekly or monthly cycles nor the Sabbaths. It DID however change their feasts.

Similarities with Pre-Captivity Calendar

Both calendars were luni-solar based.

They both used the sun to divide day from night and both used the sun to calculate and synchronize the year.

They both used the cycle of the moon to determine the months and both started the new month on the new moon day. Neither calendar started any month on any day except a new moon day.

They both would arrive at the same day for Sabbath.

The days in both calendars were not named, but merely numbered; 1st day, 2nd day, 3rd day, 4th day, 5th day, 6th day (or preparation day) and 7th day (or Sabbath - more literally, rest).

Modern Islamic Calendar

The Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a purely lunar calendar. This tells us that it is a counterfeit, having no sun to rule the years. It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon.

The calendar is based on the Qur'an (Sura IX, 36-37) and its proper observance is a sacred duty for Muslims.

Basis - Lunar based

Each month starts when the lunar crescent is first seen (by a human observer’s eye) after a new moon.

Ancient Calendars

Prior to 800 B.C. almost all calendars were lunar-solar based with 12 months of 30 days in each month.

This is readily believable if one considers that these ancient people were merely following God's original direction.

Some believe that the earth tilted on it axis at some point in ancient time, causing a change in this common observance.

Before this tilting, the months were exactly 30 days each - always.

At approximately this time different peoples in different locations adopted varying solutions and calendars to compensate for the changes in nature.

Basis - luni-solar or lunar based

New months were observed by new moons. In fact the word month is derived from the word "moon". So, there were twelve months or twelve new moons in a year.

Creation Calendar (see God's Calendar for further study)The original calendar was given to us at creation. God's Creation calendar provides two major lights to control four major calendrical cycles.

This instruction is given in Genesis 1.

The sun and the moon control the days, weeks, months and years.

The sun shines directly on us, and it controls the two cycles mentioned directly (literally) the day and the year,, the shortest and longest cycles.

The moon shines indirectly, and it controls the two intermediate cycles referred to indirectly (figuratively) the signals (weeks) and assemblies (months).

We have little record of the details of the calendar given Adam and Eve. We do however, have the general principals. I have no doubt that God taught Adam and Eve about the details as well.

Actually, Moses wrote the creation account, so Moses gave us the guiding principals in the creation story. He also gave us the details in his account of the Exodus. So, through Moses, we get the full calender account.

What are the guiding principals of the Creation Calendar?

General Principals of the Creation Calendar - Genesis has the key to unlock all this mystery:

"... to divide the day from the night; and ... for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:"

These are the functions of a calendar.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:14-18

There Are Two Great Lights"... to divide the day from the night; and ... for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:"

Moon - The moon shines indirectly and it controls the two intermediate cycles, the week and the month. These are referred to indirectly (figuratively) as signals (signs) and assemblies (seasons). (see below)

The moon and stars (lesser lights) are to rule/control at night.

Below, I will show that the moon controls / dictates the start of the new month and the weekly cycle.

Furthermore, the moon divides the seas.

Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: Jer.31.35

Sun

The sun shines directly, is the greater light, and is to rule/control the day. Not only does the sun control the day, but its light starts the day (morning) and ends it (night), so the sun controls the day(s)

The sun also controls the year. The length of time for the earth to orbit the sun is one year.

These two cycles are the shortest and longest of God's calendrical cycles. God didn't give us hours, minutes, or seconds. They are man-made.

and many lesser Lights

The stars. Some day we will probably discover (or be told in Heaven) the purpose of the stars. We know they are used for navigation, and ancient astrologers were knowledgeable about their paths and locations.

Christ's birth was announced by the star of Bethlehem and the magi followed a star. They had been studying the stars and knew to follow this one.

This may or may not relate to calendars. I plead ignorance.

These Lights Control the Cycles of Time

Days 3117 yowm yome from an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figurative (a space of time defined by an associated term), (often used adverb):--age, + always, + chronicals, continually(-ance), daily, ((birth-), each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), + elder, X end, + evening, + (for) ever(-lasting, -more), X full, life, as (so) long as (... live), (even) now, + old, + outlived, + perpetually, presently, + remaineth, X required, season, X since, space, then, (process of) time, + as at other times, + in trouble, weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), X whole (+ age), (full) year(-ly), + younger.

"Days" are the shortest time cycles contolled by the Creation Calendar and the word "day" is translated directly and means directly what it say, just as the sun that controls it shines directly upon us.
Signs - (Weeks) 226 'owth oth probably from 225 (in the sense of appearing); a signal (literally or figuratively), as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc.:--mark, miracle, (en-)sign, token.

"Signal" or "beacon" is a very appropriate translation for this word. What is the signal? It is the weekly signal that tells when it is Sabbath.

It flashes on and off indicating whether the day is a Sabbath or not.

This is a figurative (indirect) meaning just as the moon that contols the weekly cycle shines indirectly, reflecting its light from the sun.

These are the weekly signals, signaling the new moon day and the four weekly Sabbaths in a month, or the weekly cycle:

First crescent - new moon day
1st 1/4 - 8th day
Full-Moon - 15th day
2nd 1/4 - 22nd day
Dark moon - 29th day

This is also an indirect (figurative) cycle, just as the light of the moon shines indirectly.

The moon controls the monthly cycle and the word "new moon" is synonymous with month..

This word "assembly" or "season" figuratively represents months or new months or new moons (all synonyms). This representation is the calling of God's people to "assemble" or "congregate" on the new moon day and worship their Creator.

Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day. For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. Psalms 81:3,4

(notice "time appointed" and "feast day" then compare the definitions of "mow-ade" above.

Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons. Eze.46.3

These are the two times controlled or dictated by the moon. (sabbaths and in the new moons)

Years

8141 shaneh shaw-neh' (in plura or (feminine) shanah {shaw-naw'}; from 8138; a year (as a revolution of time):--+ whole age, X long, + old, year(X -ly).

"Year" is the longest cycle controlled by the Creation Calendar. The word "year" is directly translated and means directly what it says, just as the sun, which controls the year shines directly upon us.

Counterfeits - For every true act of God, Satan offers a counterfeit.

In Satan's Roman counterfeit calendar, he eliminated the moon, which God requires with His true calendar.

Without the moon, Satan's Roman calendar (the Gregorian calendar used by the whole world today) Satan has no control over the weekly or monthly cycle (controlled by the moon).

So he had to invent a counterfeit control.

No Moon ControlMonths were relatively easy. Just make artificial, arbitrary months with an arbitrary number of days, and start counting.

The weekly cycle was set into perpetual motion and no longer required control. This perpetual weekly cycle uses counting.. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1,2,3,4,

Anyone can do it. There are even three fingers left over. This false, counterfeit weekly cycle is controlled by ... nothing.

However, it is NOT self-healing, nor self-apparent, nor does it have an internal correction or verification mechanism.

It does NOT SIGNAL the people weekly to come and worship. There is no BEACON, reminding the faithful when to worship and which Sabbath of the month it is.

In contrast, God's true signal is in the heavens. All one must do is look up and know EXACTLY if it is a Sabbath and which Sabbath it is.

Likewise, the beginning of counterfeit months have no warning or announcement calling the faithful to CONGREGATE. God's true sign does.The counterfeit is artificial, fictional and arbitrary. There is no self-healing mechanism, unlike God's true.

The "new moon days" have been discarded, no longer having any meaning or use. No wonder the churches stopped teaching about new moon days.

Counterfeit Sun Control - The control of the sun was retained in the counterfeit Roman calendar, but it no longer controls the day.

The boundary (landmark) of the day was changed to midnight. This is an arbitrary boundary without any visible sign. Instead, sunrise and sunset are clearly visible to all.

In the counterfeit calendar, the sun still controls the year (ONLY - one out of four) but it has also been changed to start on January 1, in accordance with sun worship and the return of the vanishing winter pagan sun god.

Luni-solar - To follow the Biblical direction requires a calendar to be luni-solar.

Most ancient calendars were in harmony with the Bible and were were luni-solar.

A few (Chinese and Islam) are/were Lunar only.

Others (some Egyptian and modern Roman) are Solar only.

Lunar only and solar only calendars are false calendars and NOT in keeping with Biblical teaching. How do we know this? Because Genesis 1 said that there were "two great lights" the sun AND the moon; The sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night. Also to be "for signs, for seasons, and for days, and years:"

Any calendar, or calendation method, not using BOTH lights, fail the Biblical test. Lunar (only) calendars fail, as do Solar (only) calendars. God's calendar, as told in Genesis 1, is Luni-Solar.

Yesterday, Today and Forever

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Heb.13.8

And He is a reflection of His Father who is the same.

It's doubtful that a different calendar was given at creation than given Moses upon deliverance from Egypt. At least we have no record of difference, so must assume they were the same.

Even though this is slightly speculative, it doesn't matter, because we know EXACTLY what the calendar of Moses' deliverance was.

And this was the same calendar that Christ observed and followed.

And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: Gen.5.3

This shows that years were in place. The earth probably took the same amount of time to travel around the sun, so the years were the same. And the moon probably hadn't changed its orbit, so the months were the same as in Moses' time.

We also know that days and weeks were in place and the same as at the time of Moses:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: Gen.1.14

The first Biblical record of a month is:

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. Gen.7.11

We know the guiding general principals (sun, moon and stars) were the same.
